Position: Management

Job Type: Permanent

Posted: 11/12/2019 3:29:17 PM

Job Brief

The Flight Physics division is dedicated to developing and testing novel air-vehicle systems as well executing advanced research in aerodynamics.

Aurora Flight Science is a world leader in the development of highly autonomous aircraft. We are seeking a dynamic individual who can aid in Aurora’s efforts to perform novel perception technologies on unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).

Position Overview:

The Mass Properties Group is a functional group within engineering. The manager is responsible for supporting mass properties engineering activities across all Auroras air vehicle programs, from prototypes to certification, and for a wide variety of aircraft from conventional fixed wing designs to novel rotary wing VTOL configurations with electric or hybrid propulsion. The successful candidate will be required to develop and grow the mass properties engineering function, with an emphasis on staff development and establishing standard mass engineering processes.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain common mass property engineering processes for all phases of air vehicle design to assure consistency across programs:
  • mass prediction and modeling for conventional and novel air vehicles, including electric propulsion concepts
  • establishment of mass allocations for air vehicles
  • analysis of mass impacts from internal and external modifications
  • analysis of mass properties impacts to systems and subsystems
  • generation of air vehicle load balance scenarios
  • prediction of cost per pound metrics
  • evaluation of new materials, subsystems, and design concepts on vehicle mass
  • weight control and mass reduction
  • measurement of actual masses of components using industry best practices
  • management of mass changes throughout the vehicle life cycle
  • manage interactions with other disciplines, particularly loads dynamics, structural design, stability control, and performance
  • coordinate mass properties requirements with maintenance, manufacturing, logistics support, and flight operations
  • support airworthiness certification for product development
  • provide staff development for mass properties engineers by recruiting, mentoring, and training
  • support program planning for mass properties and related functions of all Aurora programs
  • coordinate with and manage interactions between Aurora and other Boeing Enterprise mass property functions

Minimum Requirements:

  • B.S. degree in engineering
  • 10 year experience in mass properties engineering of aerospace vehicles and the use of standard mass properties tools
  • Knowledge of and experience with FAA, MIL-STD mass properties/weight/CG guidance and commercial industry standards (SAWE)
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD mass properties tools and methods (CATIA V5 preferred, but not required with equivalent experience)
  • Familiarity with aerospace system design and integration, manufacture, and maintainability
  • Experience in managing small groups
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work with customers
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary design team
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor junior and senior mass properties engineers in the functions listed above
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

Desired Requirements:

  • Advanced degree in engineering
  • Direct aerospace vehicle design experience with an emphasis on mass properties or systems engineering
  • Previous line management or project team management experience
