Fly into Darrington Municipal 1S2 and trade the parking lot for a runway. Every July this North Cascades town hosts the Darrington Bluegrass Festival, and arriving by air means skipping the festival parking fees - plus one of the prettiest approaches in the state, up the Sauk River valley under Whitehorse Mountain.
A few honest notes for planning. The field is day-VFR with no fuel and no services, so top off before you come and bring your own tie-downs. It's a bit of a haul from the runway into town and out to the festival grounds - easily bikeable if you can pack a folding bike, a quick ride if you can line one up, and walkable if you're traveling light.
Once you're in town, everything's close together: restaurants, a coffee shop, a grocery store handy for supplies, and a couple of bars, all within an easy walk. For an overnight, camping is usually available on the festival grounds - check darringtonbluegrass.com - or the Darrington Motor Inn in town is a short walk if you'd rather have a real bed. Pack a camp chair, layers for cool mountain evenings, and rain gear just in case.
A small mountain strip with a big weekend - come for the music, stay for the Cascades.
