Wm 'Tiny' Zehnder Field Airport
We flew into the Frankenmuth, MI - WM 'Tiny' Zehnder Field, 66G, on their nice grass runway. We found out that they had a campground onsite. It is nestled into a wooded area with a picnic table and fire pit at the northeast end of the runway. You can park your airplane near the camping area.

They have a very nice clean pilot lounge with sofas, TV, little refrigerator with soda for purchase. The restroom with a shower is also very clean. We got up on Sunday morning walked over to the pilot lounge and had it all to ourselves. We made coffee and took our showers and were ready for the day. There is no charge for camping but a donation container was available. You can call for a free shuttle 800-BAVARIA and they will come out to the airport and pick you up and take you to town. There are a lot of fun shops in the German motif town including the famous Christmas store Bronner's also assessable by the free shuttle service. There are several choices of restaurants; we chose to eat Saturday night at the Bavarian Inn across the street from the famous Zehnders and for lunch on Sunday we ate at Tiffany's. When you are done shopping, eating etc. there is a free shuttle back to the airport. It was a very nice weekend trip. 7/27/2016 - We flew in on July 24, 2016. The field is easy to spot since its amongst several farm fields. I saw the group of hangars SE of town which stuck out within 5-8 miles. Everything the original post included was true. This is truly a hidden gem. We had the strip to ourselves. The grass strip was one of the smoothest I've flown into. After landing, park on the north side of the strip across from the club house. The club house is in the middle of all the buildings. We called the 800 number and the hotel sent their shuttle bus out to pick us up within a few minutes. Put it this way, we landed, made the call, secured the plane and had time to enjoy a can of pop which they offer for a very small fee just as the shuttle was arriving. Bus was nice and refreshingly cool inside. Fergie was our driver. Very hospitable man who will give you a few pointers of where to buy the best pie. If you havent had the Bavarian chicken dinner, you havent had chicken! Forget the $100 burger, get your chicken on! - Submitted by Steve
10/10/2013 - Flew into Frankenmuth Mi on a nice fall day in a C172. Nice smooth grass runway with nice campground. We called the Bavarian inn at 1800 Bavaria and the restaurant manager came and picked us up. Return transportation was in their nice shuttle bus. We always eat at the Bavarian inn restaurant they have good German dinners. My wife loves all the shops in the basement of the Bavarian inn and at river walk. Take the boat trip it is worth the 10.00 pp. Bronners Christmas store is a 15 minute walk to the south from the downtown area. Will return again to this nice town and airport with friendly people! - Submitted by Al
12/11/2009 - I wanted to chime in here on this one and agree with the previous writer. We flew in to Zehnder Field on a beautiful fall day and very much enjoyed ourselves. I would encourage you to allow a full day to see the town and enjoy one of the famous Frankenmuth dinners. Served family style, they specialize in both chicken our choice on this trip and German dinners next time. The terminal building was immaculate and the shower equipped bathroom would make a camping stay very comfortable. For non-campers, or those who, like me, visit the brewery downtown, a wide range of accommodations are available including very large and comfortable 'whirlpool rooms' at the Bavarian. We will definitely visit again! There is no fuel at Frankenmuth but, Marlette 77G 27 nautical miles east, has some of the best priced self-serve in the area and also a beautiful, very clean terminal building and restrooms. Just beware, Sundays often have glider operations in progress and the winch operator does not use his radio often! - Submitted by George
